ShadowQuest - Interview mit Ronny Milianowicz - über Yoga, Metal und andere Therapien

Mit ihrem Debüt Album "Armoured IV Pain" haben ShadowQuest ein beachtliches Stück Melodic Metal abgeliefert. Da bis lang nur wenig über die Schweden bekannt ist, entlockten wir Ronny (Drums) in einem Interview zunächst ein paar Fakten über die Entstehung der Band. Aber nicht nur Fakten wollten zu Papier gebracht werden. Irgendwann treten Fragen auf den Plan, die einiges über die Personen hinter ShadowQuest offenbaren.

Wenn man während der Bearbeitung eines Interview fühlt, dass ein Musiker - und  in diesem Fall Ronny von ShadowQuest - mit ganzem Herzen seinen Traum lebt, dann weiß man, dieses Interview ist jedes einzelne Wort wert. Vor dem Gespräch mit Ronny ist uns insbesondere der Song - und natürlich das Video zum Track - "Live Again" aufgefallen. Ronny verrät in diesem Interview, worum es in diesem Song geht und warum ihn gerade mit diesem Song viel verbindet.

Sandra: Viele Interviews in deutscher Sprache sind von ShadowQuest im Netz nicht zu finden. Das Wollen wir nun ändern! Fangen wir also mit grundlegenden Informationen an. Wer von Euch genau gründete eigentlich ShadowQuest? Ronny antwortet sehr ausführlich und erklärt gleich wie es dazu kam.

Ronny: Naja, im Grunde ist ShadowQuest eine komplett neue Band und eigentlich auch wieder nicht. Ragnar, unser Gitarrist, ist ebenfalls Gründungsmitglied und Gitarrist von meiner vorigen Band Saint Demon gewesen. Er war noch die ersten drei Jahre bei Saint Deamon am Start und musste dann leider wegen familiären Problemen aufhören. Dieser Teil der Besetzung änderte sich im Vergleich zu Saint Deamon also nicht und somit machten wir einfach mit dem Komponieren da weiter, wo wir Jahre zuvor aufgehört haben, bis auch Kaspar (Keys) zu uns stieß. Das war noch zu einer Zeit, bevor er Vater von drei Kindern wurde. Im Prinzip begannen wir drei mit allem.

Als Patrik (Gesang) später bei einer Show in meiner Heimatstadt war, sprach ich ihn bezüglich meines Vorhabens an. (Scheint wohl geklappt zuhaben. Anm. Red.)Rückblickend kann man sagen, dass Ragnar und ich die Band gründeten, wobei die Vision der Band und wer in dieser Band spielen sollte, war schon vom ersten Tag an geplant. Anfänglich mehr aus Spaß, denn niemand hatte vor, eine richtige Band zu gründen. Wir planten gemeinsam, wer auf dem Album spielen sollte und erst später, als wir uns alle trafen, erschien es uns als ganz natürlich, aus ShadowQuest 'ne richtige Band zu machen. Aber eins stand schon immer fest: Wir wollten Songs schreiben und ein richtig gutes Metal Album aufnehmen. Danach sehnten wir uns und genau das vermissten wir damals auch.

Sandra: Da ihr nun tatsächlich zu einer richtigen Band geworden seid, habt ihr doch bestimmt Zukunftspläne und Ziele, oder?

Ronny: Das am nächsten liegende Ziel ist: einige Male für ein paar Gigs zu proben, denn wir spielen schon im Mai erste Shows. Wir werden mit dem Metallsvenskan Festival (auf dem auch Motörhead spielen) starten und später in Göteborg als Support für Blind Guardian spielen. Das sind also unsere Pläne für die nahe Zukunft und dann haben wir auch noch ein paar Club Gigs, die voraussichtlich in ein paar Tagen bestätigt werden. Möglicherweise  kommen noch mehr Festivals dazu. Wir werden so viele Gigs wie möglich in diesem Jahr über die Runde bringen.

Außerdem planen wir unser nächstes Album Anfang 2016 aufzunehmen. Wir haben bereits das gesamte Material fertig komponiert. Es läuft momentan wirklich sehr gut mit ShadowQuest. Ich mache diese Prozesse jetzt schon seit 1999, seit dem erstes Sinergy Album durch, und kann daher ernsthaft sagen, dass ich noch nie mit besseren Menschen zusammen gearbeitet habe, musikalisch gesehen und vor allem auch auf persönlicher Ebene. Wir sind alle schon lange dabei und jeder von uns hat Kinder, dementsprechend wissen wir auch wie wir einander behandeln und respektieren sollten. Wenn ein Gig geplant ist, an dem jemand keine Zeit hat, dann gehen wir nicht über Leichen, nur um ein bisschen Ruhm für den Moment zu haben. Wir wollen natürlich etwas Geld an den Gigs verdienen, aber es wird nie ein Vollzeitjob für uns werden. Das ist unmöglich bzw. wirklich sehr schwer heutzutage.

Sandra: Aufgrund deiner Worte und Zukunftspläne nehme ich an, dass die Band ShadowQuest kein temporäres Projekt ist, oder?

Ronny: Ja natürlich, das war auch niemals der Plan. (Klang bezüglich der Bandgründung aber anders. Anm. Red.) Nachdem Jari mit den Bassaufnahmen fertig war und wir später alle ein einem Pub saßen meinte er: „Ronny, du musst mit dieser Band auf die verdammte Bühne gehen! Wir müssen unbedingt diese Songs spielen. Sie sind einfach großartig“ Damals fühlten wir das Gleiche.

Sandra: Einige Bandmitglieder spielen in renomierten Bands wie z.B. Masterplan oder auch Bloodbound. Wie bekommt ihr das zeitlich unter einen Hut, wenn man mit Leib und Seele dabei sein möchte?

Ronny: Vielleicht ist es für uns einfacher weil…(zögerlich)...hier mal ein Beispiel, wie gut wir miteinander zurecht kommen: Ich wurde neulich gefragt, ob ich auf der aktuellen Bloodbound Tour mitmachen möchte. Es gibt bei uns einfach keinen Wettbewerb oder so ähnlich. Es kommt einfach darauf an, was für eine Person du bist und wie du mit jedem besonderen Moment umgehst. (Ronny möchte hier erläutern, dass trotz der eigenen Pläne und gemeinsamen Ziele, es kein Problem gewesen wäre, wenn er erst mal mit Bloodbound getourt hätte.)  Alle Jungs sind rücksichtsvoll und wenn es nun mal einen Gig gibt, für den Bloodbound bereits gebucht wurden, dann muss Patrik natürlich diesen Gig wahrnehmen. Aber wir sind auch nicht AC/DC und haben generell nicht so viele Termine, bei denen wir in Konflikte geraten könnten. Außerdem haben wir unsere Alben auch nicht gleichzeitig veröffentlicht, was die Sache zusätzlich entkrampft. ShadowQuest machen zudem vielleicht 10-15 Gigs dieses Jahr. Es sind also nicht so viele Termine, bei denen man sich in die Quere kommen könnte.

Sandra: Wie oft seht ihr Euch eigentlich, um gemeinsam Musik zu machen oder passiert viel auf dem digitalen Weg?

Ronny: Das Komponieren der Lieder erfolgte über das Internet, aber danach probten wir natürlich gemeinsam als Band. Nächstes Mal ist die Probe z.B. bereits am Donnerstag. Du siehst also, ShadowQuest ist eine richtige Band und nicht bloß ein Projekt. Wir proben in meinem Studio, dem Studio Seven, wo wir auch das Album aufnahmen. Vier von den Bandmitgliedern leben auch bloß eine Stunde entfernt, von daher ist es auch nicht so kompliziert sich mal zu treffen.

Sandra: Stört es Euch, dass man über weite Strecken Parallelen zu andern Bands feststellen kann? (Ronny antwortet sehr ergiebig und setzt auch gleich die Beweisführung an. Wo er Recht hat, hat er eben Recht. Lest Euch doch nach der Antwort noch einmal die Frage durch. Unglaublich! Anm. Red.)

Ronny: Nein, ganz und gar nicht. Mein Ziel ist es, andere Leute so fühlen zu lassen, wie ich fühlte, als ich „Keeper of the Seven Keys“ oder „Painkiller“ hörte. Das ist genau das, worauf ich abzielte. Gestern bekamen wir z.B. eine E-Mail von einem Fan, der unser Logo haben wollte, weil er es sich als Tattoo stechen lassen wollte. Mir sind Verkaufszahlen grundsätzlich egal. Natürlich will ich gerne CDs verkaufen, aber für mich ist es wichtiger 100CDs an Leute zu verkaufen, die unsere Musik wirklich sehr, sehr gerne mögen. Ich habe so viele E-Mails von Leuten, die mir schrieben, dass unsere Musik ihnen hilft über ihre Freundin hinweg zu kommen o. ä. und das ist genau das, was ich auch möchte. Ich möchte Menschen tief berühren. Ich möchte jetzt nicht zu sehr in die Tiefe gehen, aber ich kann das auch an mir erklären.

Manche Alben können auf mich wie das Aufputschen durch 100 Becher Kaffee wirken, wenn ich mich schlecht fühle. Für mich ist Musik einfach sehr wichtig. "Armoured IV Pain" aufzunehmen war nicht unbedingt nur Spaß. Es war fast eine Frage von Leben oder Tod, weil es auf mich wie Therapie wirkte. Zu dieser Zeit befand ich mich so ziemlich im tiefsten Loch meines Lebens. Ich hatte keine Energie mehr und war total gestresst. Es passierten Dinge, die mit der Gesundheit meiner Familie zu tun hatten und es gab einfach sehr viel mit dem ich versuchen musste umzugehen. Ich brach fast und ging freiwillig in eine Psychiatrie und bat um Hilfe. Ich war an dem Punkt, an dem ich es nicht mehr ertrug und Hilfe brauchte.

Ich bekam schon immer E-Mails von Fans. Zum Beispiel hatten wir einen Song mit Dionysos, der „Forever More“ hieß. Fans schrieben mir, dass sie den Song auf Hochzeiten und Beerdigungen spielten oder so. Jetzt bin ich 40 Jahre alt und bin an dem Punkt angelangt, an dem ich zum ersten Mal wirklich verstehe, was diese Leute meinten, als sie mir das schrieben, weil ich jetzt erst weiß, wie wichtig Musik in einer schweren Situation sein kann.

Sandra: Gibt es denn einen Song auf dem neuen Album, der Dir besonders am Herzen liegt und dessen Inhalt du Fans gern näher erklären möchtest. Oder gibt es vielleicht eine Geschichte, die während der Aufnahmen zu einem bestimmten Song entstanden Ist?

Ronny: Ja, z.B. als wir das Video zum Song „Live Again“ aufnahmen, taten wir dies mit sehr viel Humour. Wir machten Yoga, Kettlebell und boxten in diesem Video, aber das Ganze hatte eine viel tiefere Bedeutung. Wenn man sich sich die Lyrics anschaut und was wir eigentlich in diesem Video machen, erkennt man, dass dies genau die Dinge waren, die mein Leben wieder herum drehten. Ich musste im Leben - wie bereits erwähnt - mit Depressionen kämpfen und so begann ich dem Boxen und auch  Yoga. Alles sollte helfen, ein bisschen Frieden in mir zu finden. Das war auch der Grund, warum wir das Video so aufnahmen, wie es jetzt ist. Es waren die Dinge, die mir in einer wirklich schweren Zeit halfen und dazu beitrugen, dass ich wieder auf die Beine kam. Es war Yoga, es war das Training und es war genau diese Musik und natürlich diese Band.

Sandra: Ist Shadow Quest derzeitig Dein einziges Projekt?

Ronny: Ja, ich bin alleinerziehender Vater von drei Kindern, ich kann nicht noch ein Projekt starten oder ich erleide bestimmt einen Herzinfarkt (lacht). Im Prinzip habe ich schon noch ein anderes Projekt am Laufen. (Ha, also doch! Anm. Red.) Ich habe mein Studio Seven, wo wir unser Album aufgenommen haben. Außerdem habe ich dort Teile des aktuellen Angra Albums und dem letzten Kreator Album bearbeitet.

Ich treffe dort sehr viele interessante und talentierte Menschen bei meiner Arbeit als Studioingenieur und Produzent. Dementsprechend bin ich in andere Projekte involviert, aber das ist mehr so eine 9-17Uhr Arbeit, während meine Kinder in der Schule sind. Es ist das "Projekt", mit dem ich mein Geld verdiene, aber es ist auf seine Art auch sehr inspirierend. Es hat sehr viel damit zu tun, warum unser Album so gute Rezensionen bekommen hat, denn ich arbeite mit sehr vielen netten Menschen zusammen arbeite, die uns auf eine positive Art und Weise beeinflussen.

Sandra: Das bringt mich zu meiner nächsten Frage: Gibt es einen bestimmten Musiker, mit dem du gerne mal zusammen arbeiten oder ihn produzieren würdest?

Ronny: Ich wollte schon immer mal mit Helloween zusammenarbeiten, sie produzieren und dann vielleicht mixen oder so. Ich habe bereits mit Uli Kusch zusammengearbeitet und vier Alben mit ihm in meinem Studio aufgenommen. Als Produzent würde ich auf jeden Fall Halloween sagen...oder Yngwie Malmsteen.

Sandra: Warum habt ihr den Entschluss gefasst, ein eigenes Label zu gründen, anstatt zu einer renommierten Plattenfirma zu gehen?

Ronny: Es lief eigentlich ungefähr so ab.

Bevor ich mit Saint Deamon bei Frontiers unterschieb, sandte ich ihnen den härstesten Song vom ShadowQuest Album zu, nämlich "All One" (3), aber sie verstanden ihn einfach nicht. Um ehrlich zu sein, ich glaube, dem Label war unsere Musik zu heavy. Aber sie sagten, dass ihnen die Produktion sehr gut gefiel und boten mir sogar einen Produktionsjob an. Dann waren wir noch mit anderen Labels in Kontakt, aber wir bekamen keine Angebote, die gut genug waren. Ich glaubte sehr an die Band kann heute auch sagen, dass ich damals Recht hatte, denn wenn du dir die Rezensionen und die Zahlen verkaufter Alben anguckst, hatte ich verdammt Recht an diese Band zu glauben, während die Labels es eben nicht taten. Das ist auch der Grund, warum wir unser eigenes Label gründeten, denn wir fanden, dass es ein sehr gutes Album war und da die Labels nicht an uns glaubten, mussten wir es eben selbst tun.

Wir wussten, dass wir ein verdammt gutes Produkt in den Händen hielten, für das wir uns den Arsch aufgerissen haben. Also starteten wir unser eigenes Label Gerlock Records. Ich könnte ein Buch darüber schreiben, über all die lustigen Sachen, die man auf der anderen Seite des Musikbusiness' so kennen lernt. Ich war immer auf der Seite der Künstler und jetzt hatte ich die Chance auch einmal die andere Seite kennen zu lernen. Wir haben jetzt angefangen einige Deals mit Vertrieben zu machen. In Japan war unser Album sofort ausverkauft, daran sieht man auch, wie gut alles läuft. Es war gar nicht so geplant, da wir wirklich keine guten Businessleute waren, als wir das Ganze starteten. Wir veröffentlichten die erste Single am ersten Oktober 2014, eine im November und eine im Dezember. Danach warteten wir bis zum 26. Januar 2015 und veröffentlichten das Album in Schweden. Jetzt kam die weltweite Veröffentlichung am 20. Februar 2015. Also hatten wir die Chance, jeden Fehler - den wir bei den Singles gemacht hatten - zu beheben. Das war wahrscheinlich das Beste, was uns passieren konnte.

Sandra: Okay, kommen wir zu meiner letzten Frage. Können deutsche Fans Euch im Sommer 2015 live erleben?

Ronny: Oh, ich hoffe doch! Es gibt zwar noch nichts Offizielles, dass ich dir verraten könnte, aber da das Album gerade erst veröffentlicht wurde und in Schweden als auch Japan sehr gut ankam, fände ich es doch sehr unrealistisch, wenn wir auf keinem Festival in Deutschland spielen würden.

Sandra: Das klingt super und lässt hoffen. Vielen Dank für das Interview. Wir wünschen euch viel Erfolg mit dem neuen Album.

With their debut album „Armoured IV Pain“, ShadowQuest put a remarkable piece of melodic metal together.  As  of now there is only little known about the guys from Sweden, so that’s why we tried to draw as many basic pieces of information about the origin of the band  from Ronny (drums) as possible. But we did not only want to get the facts on paper, no. At some point there are questions on the line which reveal a lot about the people behind ShadowQuest. When you can feel that a musician, in this case Ronny from ShadowQuest, is living his dream with his entire heart while the interview is being made, then you know, that this interview is worth every single word. Before this conversation took place a certain song ‘Live Again’ – and it’s video for the track - caught our attention in particular. In this interview Ronny is giving away what the song is actually about and why he is associating so much with this song.

Sandra:There are not many German interviews of you guys on the internet – we want to change that. So I want to start off asking some of the basic stuff: Who of you guys founded the band ShadowQuest?

Ronny: I mean it’s a new band but in one way it’s not a new band because Ragnar our guitarist was actual the original guitarist of my old band Saint Deamon. We actually composed to get him for three years when we did the first Saint Deamon album. And afterwards he had to quit because of his family situation and stuff like that. So that part never changed. We just continued to compose like we always did and also got Kaspar involved. That was before he was a father of three kids. He always wanted to play but before it wasn’t really possible since we played in Dionysus together. So I guess we three started everything but I think I asked Patrik who was on a show in my town… and this is at least three years ago… So in one way you can say that Ragnar and I started the band but the vision we had and who is going to play on it, that was planned from day one I would say. But it was more for the fun of it. It wasn’t planned as a serious thing. We planned who was going to play on the album but later on when everybody got together so well and we met, it just came natural to make a real band out of it. But from the beginning on it was only because we wanted to write songs and record a good Metal album. We longed for it and we missed it

Sandra: What are your guy’s future plans and targets?

Ronny: The closest goals now is that we rehearse a couple of times now… we are rehearsing for gigs in May and we are going to start on the Metallsvenskan festival with Motorhead and then we are also going to play in Gothenburg as a support for Blind Guardian for example. So this are our closest plans and then we have some club gigs which are going to be confirmed in a couple of days, so maybe some more festivals and then the plan is to do as many gigs as possible during this year and then start to record the next album early in 2016. We actually already composed the whole album for the second album. Everything is running really smooth with this band. I’ve been doing this since 1999, my first Sinergy album and I can honestly say I never worked with better people. I mean musically as well but first of all on the personal level. I mean everyone has kids and we’ve been around for a while so we know how we should treat each other and show each other respect. If there’s a gig somebody can’t do, we won’t walk over dead bodies just to have some fame. We want to earn some money from gigs but it’s never going to be like a full time job for us, it’s impossible. It’s really hard nowadays.

Sandra: So I guess ShadowQuest is not a temporary project, because you mentioned so many future plans?!

Ronny: Yeah of course that was never the plan, that it should just be a temporary job. Everyone felt this way. So even when Jari recorded the base, we finished it and then went to the pub and he said “Ronnie you need to go on fucking stage with this band, we need to play these songs, they are fantastic.” Yeah so everybody felt it from day one.

Sandra: Some of you are playing in famous bands such as Masterplan or Bloodbound. How do you manage to find the time for two bands when you want to commit your heart and soul to what you are doing?

Ronny: Maybe it’s easier because…. Maybe for example just to show how smooth things are running with all this members. I was actually asked to join Bloodbound on the tour. There is no competition or something like that. It’s just a matter of what kind of people you are and how you treat every special logistic moment and how you fix it. There are nice guys and everybody says for example if there’s a gig that Bloodbound was already booked for of course Patrik needs to take that gig. But of course we are not AC/DC, there are not that many dates that can be messed up. Since we also don’t really release our albums at the same time it’s not a big deal. Also ShadowQuest might do 10-15 gigs this year, so it’s not that many dates that can go wrong I guess.

Sandra: How often do you actually see each other to make music together or is a lot happening the digital way?

Ronny: The composing process was done by internet I would say. But after that… I mean we rehearsed as a band. For example next time we rehearse on Thursday. So it’s really a band it’s not just a project. We rehearse in my Studio, Studio Seven, where we also record the album. Four of the members are living just an hour from the studio, so it’s not that complicated for us to meet up.

Sandra: Do you guys mind that people find your band quite similar to other bands?

Ronny: Not at all, no. My goal as an artist is to make people feel the same way that I felt for the first time I listened to “Keeper of the Seven Keys” or “The Painkiller” or something like this. This is what I aim for, just for example yesterday a fan emailed us and wanted to have our logo because he wanted to make a tattoo and for me I don’t really care about sales numbers… I mean of course I want to sell CDs but for me it’s more important if you sell hundred records to people that really really love your music. I have so many emails from people that say that they use the songs to get over their girlfriend or whatever and this is really what I want. I want to touch people on a deeper level and. I don’t want to be too deep about it but I can even explain it for myself. If I have an album that can be like a hundred cups of coffee if I feel bad… to me music is so important. So doing the album was not something fun to do for me it was a matter of life and death almost because it was like therapy to me. At that time I was really on the lowest bottom of my whole life actually. I was totally drained of power and stressed and things happened with the health in my family and it was a lot of stuff to handle. I almost broke down, I actually went to the psychiatry emergency room and said that now I need help. I come to the point where I can’t do this anymore, I need help. I always got emails before from my fans before for example we had a song with Dionysos “Forever More” that people played on weddings or even on funerals or stuff like this. Now I am 40 years old and now is actually the first time I really understand what they meant when they emailed me this, because now I know how important music can be in a hard, difficult situation.

Sandra: Is there a song on the new album, that you like in particular and want to explain its content to the fans in more detail? Or is there a story, which developed while recording a certain song? 

Ronny: Yeah, for example when we did the video for the song “Live Again”, we did it with a lot of humor and we did it yoga in it and we did kettlebell in it and boxing and stuff like this but underneath because music can have humour and it can still be good but it can also have deeper meaning but it if you look at the lyrics and stuff and what we did in the video and the deeper meaning is that actually this was the kind of things that made my life turn around. I had to struggle through life with depressions and stuff and so I had to boxing and I had to do yoga. Everything had to deal with getting a peace of mine. So this is why we did the video the way we did because those were actually the things that took me out of a really hard time and got me back on track. It was yoga, it was training and it was this music and this band.

Sandra: Is ShadowQuest currently your only project?

Ronny: Yes, I am a single father with three kids, I can’t start another project, then I would get a heart attack I guess (laughs). But I mean in one way I have a different project because I have my Studio Seven where we record the album and I was part of the new Anger album and the last Kreator album so I meet a lot of interesting and talented people in my work as a studio engineer and producer. So I am also involved in other projects but that is like a 9am-5pm work when the children are at school so that is actually what I make money from. But it’s also very inspiring in some ways. This has also a lot to do why the album sound is so good and why we got so good reviews because I work with a lot of nice people that really affect you in a good way.

Sandra: Okay, this actually leads me to my next question. Is there someone you would like to work with or produce his music?! Someone in specific?

Ronny: I always wanted to work with Halloween in some way. I would like to produce it and maybe mix it or something like this. I already worked with Uli Kusch and did four albums with him in my studio. As a producer I would definitely say Helloween or Yngwie Malmsteen.

Sandra: Why did you guys decide to launch your own label instead of joining a famous record label?

Ronny: It was like this actually. Before I was signed to Frontiers with Saint Deamon, I sent them the hardest song on the album, which was “All One” and they didn’t understand it. Honestly, I think our music was too heavy for their label. But they said that they loved the production and actually offered me a production job. Not that it was bad quality, they just didn’t understand it. Then we were in contact with some other labels as well, but we actually didn’t get any offers that we thought were good enough because I believed in this band. I think I can say it today that I was right, because if you look at the reviews and how many albums we sold today and the response we got, I believe I was right to believe in the band when the label didn’t. This is why we started our own label because we believed that it was such a good album and that if they don’t believe in us, we have to do it ourselves. We know that we have a good fucking product and that we worked our asses off. So we started our own Gerlock Label Records. I could write a book about it, you know the fun stuff about learning this side of music because I was always on the other side of the music as the artist, you know? Now I had the chance to learn the other side of it. So we have started to make deals now with the distribution. Japan sold out directly so you see that everything is running really smoothly. It was not planned because we really were not good business men when we started. We released one single on the first of October, one in November, and one in December. We waited until January 26^th to release the album in Sweden, and now the worldwide release on the 20^th of February. So we really had a chance to fix the mistakes we made for each single. That was probably the best thing that happened, that we released it over a long period of time.

Sandra: Well we can come to my last question that I have. Do the German fans get to see you live on stage this summer?

Ronny: Oh I hope so! There is nothing official that I can tell you yet, but I think that since the album was just released, I think it needs at least 1 or 2 months before a live performance.
